Reasons Joseph Smith Is More Important Than Jesus

"Come on! ye prosecutors! ye false swearers! All hell, boil over! Ye burning mountains, roll down your lava! for I will come out on top at last. I have more to boast of than ever any man had. I am the only man that has ever been able to keep a whole church together since the days of Adam. A large majority of the whole have stood by me. Neither Paul, John, Peter, nor Jesus ever did it. I boast that no man ever did such a work as I. The followers of Jesus ran away from Him; but the Latter-day Saints never ran away from me yet...When they can get rid of me, the devil will also go." (Joseph Smith, History of the Church, Vol. 6, p. 408, 409)

"If we get our salvation, we shall have to pass by him [Joseph Smith]; if we enter our glory, it will be through the authority he has received. We cannot get around him [Joseph Smith]" Apostle George Q. Cannon, as quoted in 1988 Melchizedek Priesthood Study Guide, p. 142

"Whosoever... does not confess that God has sent Joseph Smith, and revealed the everlasting Gospel to and through him, is of Antichrist...," Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 8, p. 176

[There is] "no salvation without accepting Joseph Smith. If Joseph Smith was verily a prophet, and if he told the truth...no man can reject that testimony without incurring the most dreadful consequences, for he cannot enter the kingdom of God" Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, vol. 1, p.190

"No man or woman in this dispensation will ever enter into the celestial kingdom of God without the consent of Joseph Smith...every man and woman must have the certificate of Joseph Smith, junior, as a passport to their entrance into the mansion where God and Christ are... [Joseph Smith] reigns there as supreme a being in his sphere, capacity, and calling, as God does in heaven. Many will exclaim–"Oh, that is very disagreeable! It is preposterous! We cannot bear the thought!" But it is true." Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, vol. 7, p.289-91

"He that confesseth not that Jesus has come in the flesh and sent Joseph Smith with the fullness of the Gospel to this generation, is not of God, but is anti-christ" Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, vol. 9, p.312

"It is because the Lord called Joseph Smith that salvation is again available to mortal men.... If it had not been for Joseph Smith and the restoration, there would be no salvation," Bruce McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, p. 396, 670

"I tell you, Joseph holds the keys, and none of us can get into the celestial kingdom without passing by him. We have not got rid of him, but he stands there as the sentinel, holding the keys of the kingdom of God; and there are many of them beside him. I tell you, if we get past those who have mingled with us, and know us best, and have a right to know us best, probably we can pass all other sentinels as far as it is necessary, or as far as we may desire. But I tell you, the pinch will be with those that have mingled with us, stood next to us, weighed our spirits, tried us, and proven us: there will be a pinch, in my view, to get past them. The others, perhaps, will say, If brother Joseph is satisfied with you, you may pass. If it is all right with him, it is all right with me. Then if Joseph shall say to a man, or if brother Brigham say to a man, I forgive you your sins, "Whosoever sins ye remit they are remitted unto them;" if you who have suffered and felt the weight of transgression–if you have generosity enough to forgive the sinner, I will forgive him: you cannot have more generosity than I have. I have given you power to forgive sins, and when the Lord gives a gift, he does not take it back again." Orson Hyde, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 6, p.154-155

"You call us fools; but the day will be, gentlemen and ladies, whether you belong to this Church or not, when you will prize brother Joseph Smith as the Prophet of the Living God, and look upon him as a God, and also upon Brigham Young, our Governor” Heber C. Kimball, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 5, p. 88

"It is to be feared that in course of a century, some gifted man like Paul, some splendid orator, who will be able by his eloquence to attract crowds of the thousands who are ever ready to hear, and be carried away by, the sounding brass and tinkling cymbal of sparkling oratory, may command a hearing, may succeed in breathing a new life into this modern Mahometanism, and make the name of the martyred Joseph ring as loud, and stir the souls of men as much, as the mighty name of Christ itself. Sharon, Palmyra, Manchester, Kirtland, Far West, Adam-ondi-Ahman, Ramus. Nauvoo, and the Carthage Jail, may become holy and venerable names, places of classic interest, in another age; like Jerusalem, the Garden of Gethsemane, the Mount of Olives, and Mount Calvary to the Christian, and Mecca and Medina to the Turk." Brigham Young, History of the Church, Vol. 7, p.40-41

Ambitious Joseph Smith Project Underway

From BYU NewsNet:

The legacy begun by one man has now become the work of many.

The idea for a comprehensive work on the Prophet Joseph Smith has evolved since its conception in the 1970s into an exhaustive effort to publish every document ever written or received by Smith.

Started in part by Historian Dean Jessee, the Joseph Smith Papers project will eventually yield dozens of volumes detailing the many revelations, personal correspondences and other documents surrounding the religious leader’s life.

Scholars from both the Joseph Fielding Smith Institute for Latter-day Saint History and the LDS Church Archives are involved in the project.

The volumes are divided into the journals, documents, history and a legal series, with plans to develop an administrative, canonical and supplementary series as well, according to a release by the Smith Institute.

http://newsnet.byu.edu/story.cfm/55838

Editor Note: I have to laugh when they start doing this. Every document? I highly doubt that. I am very sure that when they are finished they will have missed at least 30 to 40 percent of the documents. Why? Because they will censor anything that puts their golden boy in a bad light. Joseph is next to Jesus Christ in Mormondumb and COB wants to keep it that way. Lets see if they will publish the letters and correspondances between church members in the early part of the 1800's where Joseph was having sex with his new polygamous wives in the hotels of rich church members. I'm pretty sure those correspondances will be left out.

A Day Of Celebration For Joseph Smith - A Little Bit Of Pyongyang In Salt Lake City On A Saturday Night

After reading about the amazing stadium spectacular in Salt Lake City in honor of the 200th birthday of Joseph Smith, I was inspired to create this photo essay:

http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/w35gray...

Of course, it's not really fair for me to compare Zion to North Korea. After all,
  • North Korea has deliberately isolated themselves from the rest of the world.
  • North Korea feeds its people a grossly distorted view of reality, and convinces them that the rest of the world is evil and miserable.
  • North Korea has built a cult of worship around their founder, revering him as the one who brought them all into the light of the one true way.
  • North Korea likes to produce huge propaganda productions at stadiums involving tens of thousands of participants who tell the story of their great founder and great society, with little or no regard for historical reality.
Thus spake Mujun.

Joseph Smith, Our Saviour

I thought I had heard everything, but yesterday in sacrament meeting a speaker declared that Joseph Smith was our Saviour. The talk was on family history and she used 1 Nephi 21:8-9 with the footnote referring to another scripture about Joseph to prove that Joseph was "my servant" who God had sent to the world to save us. 1 Nephi 21 is a rehash of Isaiah 49 except it adds the words "my servant" in verse 8. Here are the verses for 1 Nephi 21:8-9:

[8] Thus saith the Lord: In an acceptable time have I heard thee, O isles of the sea, and in a day of salvation have I helped thee; and I will preserve thee, and give thee my servant for a covenant of the people, to establish the earth, to cause to inherit the desolate heritages;

[9] That thou mayest say to the prisoners: Go forth; to them that sit in darkness: Show yourselves. They shall feed in the ways, and their pastures shall be in all high places.

The footnote in the current edition of the BoM refers to 2 Nephi 3: 6-15 which clearly is speaking of Joseph Smith. So apparently the editors of the Book of Mormon believe "the servant" added in the Book of Mormon is Joseph Smith.

Most Christians would say that Isaiah 49 refers to Jesus, but the LDS have decided that at least part of Isaiah 49 refers to Joseph Smith. This lady claimed that Joseph Smith was "my servant" who restored temple work and thus Joseph saved us. She said Joseph, Hyrum Smith and Brigham Young were all our saviors.

This is all so screwed up, but the BoM editor's footnotes do seem to support her interpretation. It's time they just cut out the middle man and started praying to Joseph.

During the month of December the LDS church will celebrate two hundred years since the birth of Joseph Smith. On December 23rd, the conference center in Salt Lake City will be packed to capacity to honor the child of Lucy Mack Smith and his birth on December 23, 1805. Isn't there a celebration going on about that same time for another baby, whose name was not Smith. When will Mormonism have cleaned Joseph Smith up enough so that he can just BE Jesus.

Name withheld for fear my wife will divorce me, and she is a damn fine wife.

Equal Time For Jesus, Mary And Joseph At Smithmas?

Randy J. posted GBH's Christmas 1997 Ensign message. He does mention Jesus Christ but doesn't discuss what Christmas is about, from a religious point of view. GBH says, in part:
"He [JS] was the instrument in the hands of the Almighty. He was the servant acting under the direction of the Lord Jesus Christ in bringing to pass this great latter-day work.

We stand in reverence before him. He is the great prophet of this dispensation. He stands at the head of this great and mighty work which is spreading across the earth. He is our prophet, our revelator, our seer, our friend. Let us not forget him. Let not his memory be forgotten in the celebration of Christmas. God be thanked for the Prophet Joseph."
Those words and the rest of the article focus on JS as if he took the Olympic torch from JC and now all eyes should be on him and his leg of the journey. I know Mormons don't see it like this but it's as if JS took over from JC. It's Christmas and far from the traditional Christian church messages celebrating the birth of Jesus, the Mormon prophet wants his people to "stand in reverence before him" - him being Smith, when the entire Christian world stands in reverence before Christ.

It's truly bizarre how so many Mormons don't see "how wide the divide" is there and why other Christian-based denoms differentiate between Mormon and Christian.

I thought there might be a word in there somewhere, too, for Mary, who carried the babe (hard work when you're riding a donkey) and gave birth in less than ideal surroundings, without comforts and without anesthetic (yowie!) And what about Joseph, who was obedient and faithful and made sure Mary and babe were safe? Isn't that some kind of a Big Deal?

The reverencing of Joseph Smith was one of the big reasons I felt very uncomfortable in Mormonism. Oh yeah, the Mormon prophet can say, "We don't worship Joseph Smith". Yet, at Christmas time (a Slightly Big Deal to Christians everywhere) GBH is stating, "We stand in reverence before him", referring to JS. WHAT ABOUT JESUS? Is he relegated to the first torch-bearer position? It surely seems so.

"God be thanked for the Prophet Joseph"? I have trouble with this. I never really liked JS even before I read more church history and found out about all his "wives", his court history, his drinking, his changing stories. I know all of God's prophets were imperfect humans and theoretically he can use anyone to do whatever he wants. I can even accept that he would use a person of questionable ethics and morals. But I can't "reverence" such a person.

I also am stunned to see the Mormon prophet state, "He [JS] stands at the head of this great and mighty work..." I thought it was JC?

GBH says, "Let not his memory be forgotten in the celebration of Christmas". {{{{cough}}}} {{{{splutter}}}} You could forgive a reader for thinking that "his memory" might be referring to Jesus? (But again, it's Joseph).

I remember this article from 1997 - when I was trying to be a Mormon but just couldn't get it right. I know it was about the stupidest thing a self-professed Christian ever did, joining Mormonism. But once I'd committed I did try to make it work. I just couldn't find Jesus there. That's a Really Big Deal to a Christian.

And Easter is even worse. I left Mormonism in the springtime, after an entire Easter weekend SM in which Easter was not even mentioned, never mind Jesus. You don't expect that in a "Christian" church, oops - no JC at Easter. (If not then, when???) When I left SM upset (Where's Jesus?) the mishies asked me, "Why is Easter such a Big Deal to you?"

Well, you know, if you have to ask... :(

But yeah, I was thinking that the donkey thing and the stable birth might merit a mention for Mary. Wasn't that at least as trying as the head in the hat thing?

(*All of this is assuming you believe in Christianity, that is. So, that's the context in which I make my comments, well aware that to many, it's all hokum anyway. But I still want the Mormon Church to make some kind of sense, I guess).

More Joseph Smith Worship - Joseph Smith Statue Dedicated In New York

Move aside Jesus, Joseph is movin on up:
On Sunday morning at 10 a.m. an eight foot statue of Joseph Smith, in his New York identity as "The Frontier Prophet" was installed in downtown Manhattan, near Wall Street. The statue will be dedicated on December 23rd at 4 p.m., the 200th anniversary of Smith's birthday with a ceremony of music, talks, and a dedicatory prayer at the site.

The location in Old Slip Park is significant for its LDS connections. In October 1832, Smith visited New York City and resided at 88 Pearl Street. While there, he wrote to his wife Emma Smith, "the buildings are truly great and wonderful to the astonishing of every beholder." He should see them now. Pearl Street is only two blocks away from the Old Slip site.

The site is also significant because on February 4, 1846, the ship Brooklyn sailed away from Old Slip bearing more than 200 LDS men, women, and children. Under the direction of Samuel Brannan, the group traveled south, rounded Cape Horn and then sailed back up the western coasts of South and North America, stopping at Hawaii and landing at Yerba Buena, later San Francisco. February 4th was, by coincidence, the same day the Latter-day Saints left Nauvoo to begin their overland migration.

Saw The Joseph Smith Movie

Yesterday, I went to see the official Joseph Smith movie that they play the JS Memorial building. My family forced me into it. Nevertheless, I was interested to see how they would portray several aspects of it.

From the beginning, the man ushering us in assured the crowd that any seat is acceptable because the "spirit will reach every one of them." Okay.

FIRST: One problem I've had with most of these movies is that a complete FICTIONAL main character is created that the movies center around. It always shows them, beginning to end, gaining a testimony. The problem? They aren't real people, this is a fictional situation. In this case, it's a girl who is with her father on a boat to see Joe, because she says, "I don't need to see him to know he's a prophet." (Which is the punchline of the movie.) At first, he's negative towards the idea, but later, he becomes a believer.

SECOND: Building on that, the whole movie takes a few bits of "true" information the church knows and builds an expanded fictionalized story around them. The characterization is all black and white. Joseph Smith is ALWAYS portrayed as a sweet man, he often winks at people with a cheery grin, and speaks in a soft voice. This holds true for the other "good" characters. The worst part were the "villains," the men that tarred&feathered Joe, the men that put him in jail, and went at him at Carthage. In the movie, they obviously used the same men that played ragabonds in Pirates of the Caribbean. Shaggy beard, all nasty looking, always drinking booze and gambling, pointing guns around. Honestly.

THIRD: Polygamy. It's not mentioned in the film. AT ALL. One who is better informed might ask, why did they put him in Carthage Jail? Because they don't explain that AT ALL, not even a half-assed explanation. Hyrum merely says, "The governer wants us to go to Carthage. Should we?" And Joseph replies, "If we go there, we will DIE." (Anyone able to confirm he actually said this, BTW?) Therefore, they didn't explain the burning of the press, due to the fact that it leaked out polygamy, Joseph's proposals to underage girls and married wives. The fact that this was omitted is a crime. If you can't make a positive movie about a person without retaining their negative aspects, you SHOULDN'T BE MAKING A MOVIE ABOUT THAT PERSON. Ridiculous.

FOURTH: While translating, Smith uncovered the Book of Mormon, with the scribe in the room, and just translated it, all casual like. First of all, in reality, it was covered, and he had his face buried in a hat, with a stone inside feeding him revelation. Why would the director omit that? Because it's STUPID LOOKING.

FIFTH: No mention of the lost manuscript. It's 116 pages of the BoM, right? If the Book of Mormon WERE true, the believers would attest that this was a "trial" during the translation process. But, obviously, questions would arise of the legitimacy of Smith's translating ability, as we know, and therefore, it is kept out of the film.

SIXTH: In carthage jail, while the pirates of the caribbean were raiding the upstairs room, Hyrum got shot and Joseph screamed in horror. Thanks to what we know from history, you would imagine he would take up a gun and fire away, shooting three men, and killing two of them while he was at it. In the movie, Joseph Smith does NOT do this. He has no weapon. Instead, he flees peacefully towards the window while the rushed flying scene out the window shows an example of bad filming.

CONCLUSION: This is HIGHLY disturbing. Nonmembers are brought to see this film by their mormon friends. You want to see an example of manipulation? Here it is. By hiding the truth, the LDS church is able to trick thousands of people. I'll bet that most of the people in the audience "felt the spirit." I know my family did. What, feeling the "spirit" while being manipulated? Say it ain't so?

Anyone else catch anything? Point it out. I'll remind you when I find something else. I thought "The Ring" horror effect of satan was particularly lame, how the camera rushed up with dull colors. Ooooh, scary.

Do Mormons Value Joseph Smith More Than Jesus And God?

To think otherwise is pure naiveté.

There is a popular song sang in Christian Churches called “Blessed be His Name”, in a concert at BYU earlier this year the song was titled "Joseph Smith: blessed be his name".

In celebration of JS’s birthday this year, BYU created a memorial to JS in their Abraham Smoot Administration building. Instead of a manger nativity scene with JC in a cradle, they depicted JS in a cradle within a setting of a log cabin, praising the restoration.

"We are the beneficiaries of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, a work which had its earthly commencement with the birth of Joseph Smith, in the hills of Vermont on a December day in 1805. As we commemorate the birth of the baby in Bethlehem, the Savior of the world, may we also remember his messenger, Joseph Smith, and rejoice in his life and sacrifice."

Amazing!!

The Multi Million Dollar Joseph Smith Movie Produced For The Legacy Theater In The Joseph Smith Memorial Building

For months I’ve wanted to go view the multi million dollar Joseph Smith movie produced for the Legacy Theater in the JS Memorial Building. . An enlightened friend who is also a member of my wife’s ward accompanied me. We met for lunch at a local watering hole, knowing that neither of us could view the movie without a toast to Old Joe... so after receiving some appropriate lubrication (I went for the 6 brew sampler); we drove over to the famed theater for our afternoon entertainment.

Upon arrival we went to secure tickets but were told that the entire theater had been booked way in advance and that we would need to get reservations in order to see the movie. Knowing that the movie was full of lies I decided that I would also tell alittle lie of my own... I veined disappointment and told the old missionary lady that the concierge at the Hotel had told us that we wouldn’t have any problem getting tickets.... upon hearing this the old lady perked up and asked... Oh are you from out of town? Why Yes we are, I said (we are, just not out of state and we weren’t staying at a hotel either) Well thats different she said, we reserve a few special tickets for out of state guests.

When the 1:30 show began I fully expected the theater to be bursting at the seams... needless to say... it was barely a third of the way full... what was all the fuss about telling us it was a sold out showing in the first place I wondered? As we entered the theater we were offered a kleenex...I wondered if this was to wipe my ass with?I had been warned in advance that the movie was a propaganda marvel...but I don’t think I was prepared by the amount of literal whitewashing (yeah there's even a metaphorical whitewashing scene in the movie) and depth of emotional manipulations the church would employ to create their fictional embellishment of Joseph’s amazing life. If I didn’t know his history, I would have been overwhelmed... but by the end of the movie I just needed a bag to throw up in.

Through out the movie the church used manipulative emotional triggers in the hope of felicitating some sensation... and in this they were successful... the movie put a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach...but the main thing it did, through out the movie, was cause me to ask the question WHY?? Why was Joseph in Harmony PA? (treasure seeking) Why did his father in law hate him so? (Cuz he didn’t stop glass looking as promised and he eloped with his daughter) Why was Joseph tarred and feathered? (hitting on the Johnson girl) Why did Joseph leave Kirkland? (running from law due to bank fiasco) Why did the Missourians hate the Mormon's so? (complicated but both parties share some blame...Mormon’s weren’t innocently persecuted due to their religion as portrayed in the movie) Why the problems of choosing a successor after Joseph’s death if BY WAS set apart as such as portrayed in the movie? (he wasn’t) Why no gun in Joseph’s hand in Carthage Jail? (whitewash) Why did Joseph go to Carthage? (absolutely no mentionthat he was being charged with issues related to his polygamy activity).

I give the Morg credit... Their effort would make even Lenin proud... Propaganda is alive and well in America Today... But I was surprised that they left out the scene where Joseph walks on water...

The movie presupposes that Mormon history or more specifically the history of Joseph Smith took place in a vacuum. The movie shows various scenes from the life of JS based on the very scrubbed up version of events generally taught in Mormon Sunday School and Seminary classes etc.

But these things, did no take place in a vacuum... events don’t just take place all by themselves.... they are generally a reaction based on some other event. Much like a queue ball hitting a grouping of pool balls.... human events are generally a reaction to other events....This in my humble opinion is one of the major flaws of this movie.... it is a white washed, scrubbed, distortion of events...and it fails to tell the whole story...the story behind the story... and left me asking.... yeah BUT WHAT caused that to happen...But what can you expect from an organization led by men that publicly dismiss the value of truth in its own history...

Now where is that Bag!

LDS Author Claims Joseph Smith Came From Jesus' Family Tree

Here we go with more Joseph Smith worship - from the Salt Lake Tribune:
Vern G. Swanson, longtime director of the Springville Museum of Art has written a provocative new book theorizing that Jesus Christ was married to Mary Magdalene, that they bore children and that LDS Church founder Joseph Smith was their direct descendant. Swanson also suggests that this heavenly birthright gave Smith spiritual authority as a prophet and affirms the historical legitimacy of the LDS Church.

Titled Dynasty of the Holy Grail: Mormonism's Sacred Bloodline, the book was published in November by Cedar Fort, a Springville-based publisher. The scholarly 540-page tome hasn't yet attracted much attention beyond Utah, but Swanson believes his topic will eventually reach a large audience of Mormons, Holy Grail theorists, and fans of The Da Vinci Code book and movie.

To support this claim, Swanson cites public statements from 19th-century LDS Church leaders, including Brigham Young, who wrote in 1859, "Hidden in the blood of many LDS runs the blood of Israel from numerous directions, including that of the Savior. But it is specifically through the divine blood-right of Christ through Joseph Smith Jr. that all members of the Church are lawful heirs of the promise."
http://www.sltrib.com/ci_4966134

How does Swanson know if Brigham Young was speaking as a man? Oh yes, if it's faith promoting, he was speaking as a Prophet Of God(tm). If it is controversial or damaging to the church, he was speaking as a man.

My last calling was on the High C. They kept the same basic Stake schedule from year-to-year. One Ward always was stuck with its Ward Conference in December. I was helping with the calendar and suggested to the SP we might want to make December lead up to Christmas, focus on Jesus, and have no Ward Conferences that month. They ignored me. So, months later, there we were sitting about a week before Christmas with a big old picture of Joseph Smith on the program and singing ‘Praise to the Man’. I thought to myself, this is ridiculous. As for the talks, the general theme was Joseph Smith, with a supporting cast of tithing and missionary work. All we were missing was ‘Happy Birthday’! I lost it, wrote “Merry Smithmas” on the bottom of the program, and passed it down the row to my friend. The ten people in between could see what I had written. I didn’t care.

Fast-forward one year and four months. I haven’t been to church in about a year. The friend I referred to above called me, “You won’t believe the message I just got. They asked me to speak next Sunday in sacrament meeting. The theme is the restoration and the church being established on April 6. They want me to speak about Joseph Smith and how he was misjudged by the world.” [Insert here any of the responses that just went through your brain. Yes, I thought of all of them. Please remember, this is a family show.] I told him that Option 1 would be to leave a message back saying, “Actually, this Sunday is Easter, so we are going to attend a church where the message is about Jesus.” He said, “What is option 2?” I said, “I’ll write the talk for you.”

“[There is] no salvation without accepting Joseph Smith. If Joseph Smith was verily a prophet, and if he told the truth...no man can reject that testimony without incurring the most dreadful consequences, for he cannot enter the kingdom of God"

- Prophet Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, v. 1, p. 190

"No man or woman in this dispensation will ever enter into the celestial kingdom of God without the consent of Joseph Smith...every man and woman must have the certificate of Joseph Smith, junior, as a passport to their entrance into the mansion where God and Christ are"

- Prophet Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, v. 7, p. 289

"I tell you, Joseph holds the keys, and none of us can get into the celestial kingdom without passing by him. We have not got rid of him, but he stands there as the sentinel, holding the keys of the kingdom of God.. Then if Joseph shall say to a man, or if brother Brigham say to a man, I forgive you your sins, ‘Whosoever sins ye remit they are remitted unto them;’ if you who have suffered and felt the weight of transgression–if you have generosity enough to forgive the sinner, I will forgive him: you cannot have more generosity than I have. I have given you power to forgive sins, and when the Lord gives a gift, he does not take it back again."

- Apostle Orson Hyde, Journal of Discourses, v. 6, p. 154

The congregation will now sing Hymn # 27.
