Can You Imagine If Elder's Quorum Was Run Like A Quorum Of The Twelve Meeting

Am I the only one who finds it odd that God’s special representatives on earth are so petty and childish in their rigid insistence on seniority?

Re-read the comment of Tom Perry from the following link (quoted below):

Notes from Kuna Idaho Stake Conference

March 21, 2004

L. Tom Perry

"We are certain to follow the order of the Church in our meetings and in all we do. This has been clearly established. For example, I would never think of going through a door before Elder Packer. He is the President of our Council. It is the President of the Council who selects the President of the Church. Is there any other way the Lord controls who he selects as a prophet? If He doesn't want an apostle to preside, He who controls life and death calls him home.

"Every week the Cummings Chocolate people send us a 3 lb. box of chocolates. In our meeting, we follow our order and President Packer picks first, then I choose, and so on. Poor Elder Eyring has never had a light chocolate yet! Perhaps if he lives long enough!!"

Didn’t Jesus say he that is greatest among you shall be your servant? Imagine all the Mormon commoners lining up outside their classrooms on Sunday so they could enter the room in order of their seniority. And can you imagine Jesus grabbing for the biggest slice of unleavened bread because he gets to pick first.

If Packer and co. were Christ-like, and know that Eyring also prefers light chocolate, do you think they might let him pick first for a change, or maybe pick a dark chocolate now and again to let the juniors have what they prefer? It sounds like the epitome of spirituality on earth, God’s special witnesses are just as self-centered as my kids. Good manners only apply to the commoners, I guess.

My Meeting With L. Tom Perry

Topic: L. TOM PERRY   -Link To MC Article-
Several years ago as a member of my old stake’s high council, I was interviewed by none other than “Special Witness to Jesus Christ” L. Tom Perry. L. Tom or as I like to refer to him, “L-Cool T”” was in my stake to pick a new stake president. As a member of my stake HC I was a potential candidate for the new job which warranted an interview. At the time I was an “Off the Richter Scale-Uber-Mormo-Nazi-TBM.

All my life I had been taught that these men had special super-human powers which would allow them to look deep into the souls of any man and see their inner core. I honestly believed that L. Tom could use his X-Ray vision to look deep into the recesses of my heart and see any and all hidden sins I had never confessed. (not that I had any). The reality of this belief gave me pause and caused me to make an assessment of my life. Was there anything that I needed to confess prior to my meeting? Upon reflection I decided that I was worthy of my interview and proceeded.

Members are often under the impression that each new Stake President is called by the inspiration of God. That God whispers the anonymous name of the new Stake President into the ears of the Apostle assigned to the reorganization. However, like many other general Mormon misconceptions, reality is quite different than general perceptions.

Prior to my interview, a special meeting was held by the departing stake presidency and the current stake high council. In this meeting the SP announced that his tenure as SP was coming to an end and that L.- Cool T, I mean L. Tom, would be attending our next stake conference to reorganize a new stake presidency. He then asked each member of the high council to “write down” names of potential stake members that "we" thought would make good candidates for the next Stake President. WTF??? OK I was nieve’, but this procedure blew me away. I was on the HC but I didn’t think I was qualified to submit names to a member of the 12. I thought that God would tell him who the next stake president would be by the gift and power of God. That he could merely look at a list of the Stake membership and God would highlight the name of the next SP for him. Not that "I" would be telling him who to consider. Boy was I in for a surprise.

So as instructed and being the good soldier that I was, I wrote down the names of all my enemies in the stake, just kidding, I wrote down all the names of guys I thought would make a good stake president. The mere fact that I was Exed only a few years later may go to the heart of my ability to submit qualified names. But surprise of all surprises...one of the guys whose names I submitted was called as the new SP.

Any way back to my interview...

At the appointed time for my interview I arrived early in a crisp white shirt, conservative dark gray suit and dark blue non-descript tie carrying my quad. My hair was cut missionary style and I tried to fake the part of a potential SP candidate. L. Tom, dressed in his best “Mr. Mac” suit was accompanied by Billionaire John Huntsman. Yeah it was kind of surreal.

As I sat, L. Tom introduced both himself and Huntsman. He then used his super-human powers on me...sliding his glasses to the end of his nose and leaning forward ... he asked... Bro Paxton, are you morally clean. I stopped and thought when the last time was that I played with my little factory... I determined that it had in fact been long enough of a lapse so I told him that I was indeed morally clean. He then asked me to bare my testimony. I proceeded to declare my utmost belief in all things Mormon, that the BoM was indeed a history of the inhabitants of the America’s, that God had indeed restored his true gospel and that Christ was the head of this church...but even in my spiritual fervor...I somehow detected a slight ting in L. Tom’s eye. Perhaps it was the spirit talking to Tom, telling him that sitting in front of him at that very moment was a future apostate of the church or maybe he was merely passing gas, but somehow I could tell that I didn’t pass his test and didn’t measure up in his eyes.

He thanked me for my testimony and gave a secret password to John Huntsman that he had rejected me as a candidate...where upon Huntsman started to tell me about his family and how he had hired a gardener to take care of his yard when he was poor so that he could spend more time with his family. I kid you not; this billionaire hired a gardener to care for his yard when he was poor...I wanted to ask him what his definition of poor was...but I knew it didn’t matter, I hadn’t made the grade...God must have told L. Tom that I had played with my little (its big to me) factory, once too often to be found worthy.

But I take heart in knowing that both L. Tom and I picked the same man to be the new SP.

Adam In The Latest Ensign: What Does He Teach Us?

February's Ensign has this front page headline: "Lessons from Adam's Time to Ours."

I was intrigued. The church teaches that Adam's Time was 4000 BC. So I foolishly opened the magazine.

http://www.exmormon.org.uk/tol_arch/a...

The cover was a little misleading. The article is just the usual reprint for the start of the Old Testament Year in Sunday School. Adam only rates a few paragraphs, and the word 'time' is not mentioned. This is what it says:

L. Tom Perry wrote:
In the first dispensation, the Lord created Adam and Eve, placed them on earth, and gave them opportunities to choose (see Moses 3:17). They were commanded not to partake of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, for they were told they would be cast out of the garden if they did. But partaking of the fruit would give them mortality. They partook of the fruit.

The Fall was not a disaster. It wasn’t a mistake or an accident. It was a deliberate part of the Lord’s plan of salvation. As a result of the Fall, we are subject to temptation and misery as a price to comprehend authentic joy. Without tasting the bitter, we would never be able to understand the sweet (see 2 Nephi 2:15). We required mortality’s discipline and refinement for the next step of our development to become more like our Father.

What does this first dispensation teach us? We are the literal spiritual offspring of our Heavenly Father. When we are born into mortality, we receive physical bodies created in His image (see Genesis 1:27). We are promised that if we receive the necessary ordinances, keep the covenants, and obey God’s commandments, we will enter into exaltation and become like Him.
http://tinyurl.com/bx8qpe

The key phrase (if you read the rest of the article) is "keep the commandments." Every dispensation, according to this article, teaches us to keep the commandments. So we can summarize the quoted passage as follows:

L. Tom Perry wrote:
They were commanded not to partake of the fruit of the tree of knowledge... They partook of the fruit. ... The Fall was not a disaster. It wasn’t a mistake or an accident. It was a deliberate part of the Lord’s plan of salvation. ... What does this first dispensation teach us?... obey God’s commandments
God says "do not eat". Adam eats. That is what God wanted. And what does that teach us? To obey God.

What?

I think it teaches us to do that disobeying God is sometimes the right thing to do.

What does it teach you?

L. Tom Perry Says Not Good For LDS To Be Seen As "Different"

L. Tom Perry says that it is not a good thing for LDS to be seen as "different."

http://www.ldschurchnews.com/articles/57309/Set-example-to-improve-image-of-Church.html

That's not how it used to be. Let's take a trip down General Conference Memory Lane:

"The Latter-day Saints are expected to be a PECULIAR PEOPLE" -- Apostle Francis M. Lyman, GC Oct 9, 1892.

"The great characteristic of this Church, my brethren and sisters, which distinguishes it from all other organizations upon the face of the earth, is UNION. It is this that has marked us as a PECULIAR PEOPLE from the commencement." President George Q. Cannon, GC, April 7th, 1895.

"In this respect I think we are a PECULIAR PEOPLE, DIFFERENT from every other people upon the face of the earth." President George Q. Cannon, GC, April 9, 1899.

"The Latter-day Saints are looked upon as a PECULIAR PEOPLE, and they are the MOST PECULIAR PEOPLE to be found upon the face of the earth." Elder Ben E. Rich, GC April 7, 1901.

"We are considered by the world a PECULIAR PEOPLE. By the unbeliever, the members of the Church of Christ in all ages of the world have been considered a PECULIAR PEOPLE." Apostle George A. Smith, GC April 6, 1904.

"He has brought us into these mountains that we may raise up a holy generation, a PECULIAR PEOPLE . . ." Apostle Charles W. Penrose, GC Oct. 9, 1904.

". . . we are a PECULIAR PEOPLE, . . ." President Francis M. Lyman, GC, April 7, 1905.

"The Latter-day Saints are a peculiar people, . . ." President Francis M. Lyman, GC, Oct. 6, 1905.

"let us, my brethren and sisters, continue to be a PECULIAR PEOPLE. Let our influence be felt wherever we go. Let it be said of us that we are indeed a peculiar people, . . ." Elder Rulon S. Wells, GC Oct. 8, 1905.

"We should be a PECULIAR PEOPLE right here in Salt Lake City, and in all other cities, in every part of our state, and the other States where our people are found." President Francis M. Lyman, GC Oct. 1906.

"God's people are spoken of in scripture, ancient and modern, as a chosen people, as a royal priesthood, a PECULIAR PEOPLE, . . ." Apostle David O. Mckay, GC Oct. 1910.

". . . this people 'dwells apart,' that they should be in reality 'a PECULIAR PEOPLE.' . . . Then we shall indeed be a 'PECULIAR PEOPLE' and become as God would have us" Apostle David O. McKay, GC Oct. 1911.

"the Lord has decreed that this people should be a PECULIAR PEOPLE UNLIKE ANY OTHER PEOPLE." Apostle Melvin J. Ballard, GC, April 1921.

"We are a PECULIAR PEOPLE" Elder Charles A Callis, GC Oct 1921.

"The Lord has said that this people would be a PECULIAR PEOPLE quite unlike anybody else" Apostle Melvin J. Ballard, GC, Oct 1922.

"We are accounted a STRANGE PEOPLE and a PECULIAR PEOPLE by some, and it is true, in a way, that we are. OUR BELIEF SEPARATES US FROM THE REST OF THE WORLD" Elder Samuel O. Bennion, GC, Oct 1923.

"We are a PECULIAR PEOPLE in many ways," Apostle George Albert Smith, GC, Oct 1924.

"We are to be a PECULIAR PEOPLE." Apostle Melvin J. Ballard, GC, April 1929.

"We are a PECULIAR PEOPLE and ever shall be and ever must be a PECULIAR PEOPLE." Apostle John A. Widsoe, GC, April 1940.

"My Brethren and Sisters: We Latter-day Saints are certainly a PECULIAR PEOPLE," Apostle Joseph F. Merrill, GC, Oct, 1940.

" but we are a PECULIAR PEOPLE, and by that we mean that WE ARE DIFFERENT and should be DIFFERENT from the rest of the world because we are not of the world." Apostle Joseph Fielding Smith, GC, April, 1947.

"This fact is sometimes indicated by the statement that we are a PECULIAR PEOPLE -- something of which we are proud " Apostle Joseph F. Merrill, GC, April 1951.

"God bless us, my brethren and sisters, that we may continue a PECULIAR PEOPLE," Apostle Ezra Taft Benson, GC, Oct 1955.

"Our position is not like that of other organizations or churches. We are a PECULIAR PEOPLE." Elder Bruce R. McConkie, GC, April 1964.

"I am sure most will at least agree that we are a PECULIAR PEOPLE, . . . Yes, we doubtless are in many ways a PECULIAR PEOPLE, a DIFFERENT PEOPLE." President Hugh B. Brown, GC, April 1969.

Witnesses To The L. Tom Perry Manuscript

Here is my idea:

L. Tom Perry had a manuscript in his briefcase he brought to Sweden. This manuscript had the answers to troubling questions about Mormonism. We know this is true, because why would anyone lie about that?

Nevertheless, a few people are doubting that L. Tom Perry had a manuscript that had the answers to troubling questions about Mormonism. So how can the Church respond to these naysayers?

I propose that the Lord select three men who stand to materially benefit from the existence of the manuscript. These men can then sign a statement someone else wrote for them, which will say that an angel showed them the manuscript, and the voice of God declared that the manuscript does in fact contain the answers to troubling questions about Mormonism.

The Lord will also select eight friends and relatives of L. Tom Perry. L. Tom Perry will take them to a private location and show them the manuscript. The manuscript will be written in a language that these eight friends and relatives cannot read. They will then sign a statement, written for them by someone else, attesting that they have been shown the manuscript that contains the answers to troubling questions about Mormonism.

At that point, an angel will take the manuscript back to heaven so that nobody else will ever see it.

I see no reason why this procedure should not convince any reasonable person that the answers to troubling questions about Mormonism really exist, and that said answers really were in the manuscript that L. Tom Perry had.
