Total Articles: 5
Paul H. Dunn was a general authority of the Mormon Church. Paul was famous for telling lies woven into his talks and stories in order to more fully indoctrinate members. Some of his lies included being a professional baseball player and serving in World War II where a machine gun ripped his clothes off but left him alive due to his garments.

Thoughts On Paul H. Dunn

I was just reading some old posts and thought I'd pass along this personal experience with GBH.

The Saturday after the Paul H. Dunn fiasco was made public GBH was attending business in our area and we had a regional PH leadership meeting with him. It was an odd sort of PH leadership meeting that was all Q&A. At the time ETB was still prophet I think. Anyway, the first question thrown out was "What do you think of the Paul H. Dunn story?". He had a copy of the AZ Republic at the podium and he picked it up to show the Dunn story to the audience and said he had not been aware of the situation or the story until he read it that morning in the paper. He then went on to say that Elder Dunn was very sick and near death and that he had last visited him at home or in the hospital xx months ago.

Honest. I was there. Sitting on the front row less than six feet from him. Heard it with my own ears. Saw him say it with my own eyes.

Looking back on it I have a supremely difficult time believing that the FP and COB was unaware of Dunn disaster about to unfold. Anyone know anything to the contrary?

- -

IIRC, Lynn Packer, the reporter who did the digging, was with one of the SLC tv stations at the time. The station supposedly was pressured by the COB from going public with the story, so Packer leaked it to the Arizona Republic, knowing it would be printed. Lynn Packer (BKP's nephew, BTW) was packed off to BYU for a time, then got booted from there for embarassing a GA (Dunn). I seriously doubt Hinky Winky didn't know.

- -

I agree, in fact I would go so far as to say Uncle Paul was sent on a damage control mission shortly before. I heard with my own ears a talk by Dunn in a Saturday night leadership meeting shortly before (less than a year) the lie was public.

He spent a lot of time discussing how he was instructed by COB/First Prez to remind the members to not believe everything they hear regarding stories. He mentioned that many speakers give their own opinions, and that if it does not say Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on the back, well, it might not be true. He recommended that as leaders we needed to make sure all lessons come from "Church approved" (in other words Correlation Control) literature.

At the time I thought it was strange, because at one point he said "even stories I've told are not appropriate for sacrament meeting". When the lies were exposed...his talk made perfect sense...

The Day I Looked Up Paul H. Dunn In The Encyclopedia Of Baseball

When I was about junior high age, I was really into Avalon Hill's Statis-Pro Major League Baseball. It was a game of skill and chance that used the stats of real major league baseball players. You could play teams against each other, trade players if you wanted, have all-star games, or you could play out a tournament. It was a cool game. I still have it somewhere.

Anyway, this was the early 1980's when my Mom started coming home with Paul H. Dunn talk tapes. Dunn used to talk about his experiences playing for the St. Louis Cardinals, and how all these rough, tough baseball players, like Ted Williams, used to come to his room after games and tell him how much they admired him and wanted to be like him. He would pray with them and teach them about the Gospel. I was impressed. Ted Williams - wow.

At that time, I was creating teams for my game, like the 1927 Yankees or the 1975 Cincinnati Reds. I would play them against each other and watch Babe Ruth and Lou Gherig beat the snot out of Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, and Johnny Bench. I thought it might be cool to have Paul H. Dunn as a player in my game too, maybe in some sort of all-star game. So, I went to the library and pulled out the hallowed Encyclopedia of Baseball, a great big book which had all the stats of every pro baseball player ever to play in the major leagues. That's where I got my stats.

There was a problem though. They had no Paul H. Dunn listed as having played for the St. Louis Cardinals. There was a Paul Dunn listed, but he didn't play for the Cardinals, and he was from the wrong time period. So, I thought maybe I got it wrong. I went back to Dunn's tape, "They Want What You And I Have" and sure enough he said he played for the St. Louis Cardinals. The Encyclopedia of Baseball had every major league player, so I was confused.

I remember asking Mom who Paul H. Dunn was and why he was making up stories about playing in the major leagues. I asked her if he was also making up stories about being a church leader. Mom went off like a teapot, and I never mentioned the name of Paul H. Dunn again around her.

This apparent contradition bugged me for a long time, until it finally came out that, yeah, Dunn used to tell a lot of stories. Oh well, at least church leaders have the gift of discernment, right?

Paul Dunn And Others Had Me Fooled At One Time. How Sad.

I was one who was fooled by Paul Dunn. I was out of the church long before his lies were exposed, but there was a time when I believed him. What a sap I was.

The stories were too good to be true. I should have smelled a rat. I did not have any interest in baseball, so I took the baseball stories at face value, without wondering where those baseball cards were, or why some of the baseball "greats" did not show up to give a speech with him. After all, he claimed he was admired. And the Mormons surely did admire him. Paul Dunn was good. He made us feel like we were not a bunch of martinets, kooks, scolds, and meanies . Compare Dunn to McConkie. Its easy to see why people liked Dunn.

I sent a copy of one of his speeches to a Methodist girl I liked. I wanted her to join the church. She sent a polite reply, thanking me for the speech. I know it did not impress her. God, why was I so stupid? Hindsight is good, isn't it? Anyone with a dispassionate mindset could have seen Dunn was a fraud.

But I thought "The Miracle of Forgiveness" was a reflection of the true state of God's thinking on the forgiveness business. I was depressed by the book, but kept thinking it must be correct.

I also tried to tell myself the temple ceremony came from God. It left me sick with fear, worry, and many logical questions. How could the God who made the world, giraffes, dinosaurs, and Marilyn Monroe come up with such a lame, scary, bloodthirsty, and weird ceremony? But hey, I kept trying.

I was fooled for a long time, despite nagging doubts which told me something was terribly wrong. The capacity for self-delusion is remarkable.

It finally ended for good with the Oaks/Hinckley press conference during the Hoffman days of terror. I watched it, appalled, and realized that I was looking at two men with sweaty shirts who had some sleepless nights wondering which direction things would go. The giants became midgets, the hunters the hunted.

Come Listen To My Story About A Man Named Paul - A Poor Mormoneer Told Some Lies And Took A Fall

Hi, to all the forum people.

It has been some time since I posted, here. I tried to post some thoughts, about the late Paul H. Dunn, on the Mormon Apologetics forum, but it was shot down.

I had always wondered why the leaders of the Church, with their special gifts of prophecy, revelation, and seership, didn't "see" the lies that Elder Dunn was telling, no more than 20 feet away from those Prophets, Seers, and Revelators --sitting elsewhere on the stand, at the old Tabernacle, on Temple Square, during General Conference(s).

Elder Dunn painted a picture of himself as a "double hero", you all know. Right?

Elder Dunn was only "caught" in his lies when a sharp-eyed investigative journalist named Packer put "two and two together" and

came up with the correct answer. (By the way, this "Packer" was...and still is...the nephew of Uncle Boyd K. Packer).

I still also wonder "why" the church membership largely refuses to hear this "story with a moral lesson at the end", that has to do with Dunn. There are some real object lessons that can be learned, from it.

And, why get booted off from a forum like the one I mentioned, for wanting to know the truth and for wanting others to know and learn, also? What is there to be gained from refusing to hear that Elder Dunn was a lying douche-bag?

(This is supposed to be satire, here. Please remember that I am a satirist, first and foremost; and, that I think that there are a lot of really funny things, attached to serious themes, in life.)

Note: In life, aren't all liars fondly referred to as douche-bags?

Caveat: I never referred to Elder Dunn in negative terms, over at that other forum/board: where people don't get the satire and seem not to have a sense of humor.

Leaders are "public figures": and, as such, they are never above scrutiny. If they convince people that they indeed are above scrutiny, then they will have received a "vote of confidence" to do whatever they want to do: with impunity.

(Is that a fair assessment?)

Didn't Reverend Moon (of the Moonies) do whatever he darned-well pleased?

Didn't David Koresh, of the Branch Davidian, do whatever he....pleased?

Didn't Jim Jones, of "Jonestown", do what he wanted, and gave the people kool-aid (vis-a-vis, cyanide)?

Didn't Bill Clinton do whatever he...pleased, and "had sex with that woman"?

Is there a true "need" for watchdogs and whistleblowers?

What would happen (and have happened) without such watchdogs and whistleblowers?

Can real progress be made, if people don't hold their leaders to account?

Finally, the Bible says, "No liar hath eternal life resting within him".

Is lying offensive to "The Church"?

Is lying offensive, to God?

The list of questions could go on and on. There are still many unanswered questions, over the story about a man named Paul.

Paul H. Dunn Lied Through His Teeth To Me And I Felt The Spirit

Paul H. Dunn Lied Through His Teeth 2 Me at A Saturday's Warrior Pre-Show Gig and I Felt The Spirit... And I'll never forget it!

I knew it...and I knew that God knew it!!!

We were encouraged to bring non-members to this particular Saturday's Warrior showing in an effort to "share the gospel" (according to Moronism) with our non-member friends.

So there I sat with 3 of my High School pals who were mostly Born-again Xtians and listened to Paul H. Dunn (PHD) do his regular comedy routine gig that could suddenly turn solemn on a dime and you could just literally "cut the spirit with a knife" it was so thick and pervasive in that Convention Center Theater that evening.

I felt it bad...and I knew that God knew that I felt it bad...and I was so sure that my 3 High School chums felt it bad as well and I just knew that they were gonna ask to be Baptized and join all of us Morons who just knew that "the spirit" truly does testify of all truth!

Shortly after the show it seems I recall that my 3 High School buddies had great difficulty really understanding the essence of Saturday's Warrior due to all of its insider "Moronisms" that really only Morons would be aware of in the first place...and no...not a single one of them felt "the spirit" bad like I had felt it bad throughout PHD's comedy bit or any of the Saturday's Warrior performance.

Shortly after that Saturday's Warrior incident PHD was called on the carpet before a Moron tribunal of leading Chruch Authorities and handed down a sentence of Lynching By The Neck until he was dead...or was it by firing squad while he sat on the edge of his own casket...or both...or whatever...well that's my story and I'm sticking to it!!!

Moral of the story: No matter what a so-called LDS Inc Chruch Authority says whenever his lips are moving he's lying and the so-called "spirit" that you feel was never and can never be intended as ANY sort of arbiter of "truth" in any way, shape or form!

On a side note: Nearly 30-years later some of those schmaltzy Saturday's Warriors songs can still be retrieved from the dusty corners and crevasse's of my still-fertile brain where they are stuck in a time warp. Oh...and I can still recall how good-looking some of those Saturday's Warrior actresses were!

Or so it seems to me...
