The Sunstone Foundation was established in 1974 by a small group of graduate students interested in starting a journal for young Latter-day Saints to exchange ideas and experiences. From that beginning, it has grown to become the host of several different forums.
Early members of the Sunstone Foundation were excommunicated from the LDS Church for holding beliefs contrary to the teachings of the Church. Mormons are counseled to avoid Sunstone Teachings and their symposiums.

Next week's annual Sunstone Symposium is teeming with its traditional fare: from a look at existential philosophy and Mormonism to dream analysis as a key to success; from LDS humanitarianism to excavating female roles in religion; from "intelligent design" to LDS missionary work, race relations, the problems of single Mormons and homosexuality.
This year's three-day conference for Mormon intellectuals at the Sheraton City Centre Hotel in Salt Lake City is also offering its own explorations of LDS founder Joseph Smith to coincide with the church's celebration of his 200th birthday.
But for the most part the hefty program reads like a list of recent postings on any number of Mormon blogs. These subjects have been discussed ad nauseam by countless writers across the country.
So the question is: After 26 years, has the Sunstone Symposium, an independent forum on Mormonism, become obsolete?

Nineteen-year old Gretchen Sheets McNees was sitting in a University of Utah classroom, when a plainclothes policeman called her out. Something was wrong at home, he said.
On the drive to the police station, she hoped it was a traffic ticket but feared worse. The truth was beyond imagining. Her mother, Kathleen Sheets, had been brutally murdered with a pipe bomb.
"When my dad told me, it was like all my bones had been ripped out of me," McNees said Thursday. "I crumpled to the ground."
McNees made her emotion-packed remarks as part of a panel discussion, "Twenty-Year Reflections on the Mark Hofmann Bombings," held at the annual Sunstone Symposium, an independent gathering of Mormon intellectuals.
